Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder.  Melanocytes are the cells that make pigment, which creates color in the skin, the mucous membranes and the retina.  In patients with vitiligo, these cells are destroyed.  Between two and five million Americans have vitiligo.  Physical symptoms include white patches of skin or whitened hair (depigmentation) on the affected areas of the body.  Patients may first notice patches on the skin, particularly in the sun-exposed ears.  When depigmentation occurs on just a few areas, it is called focal pattern.  When it occurs on one side of the body exclusively, it is called segmental patterning.  For most vitiligo patients however, a generalized pattern develops in various of the body.  Premature graying may also occur.

The goal for treating vitiligo is to restore the function of the skin and to improve the patient's appearance.  Therapy for vitiligo takes a long time - it usually must be continued for 6 - 18 months.  The choice of therapy depends on the number of white patches and how widespread they are and on the patient's preference for treatment.

P.S. - The cause of vitiligo is unknown.
