Promising Treatments for Arthritis

Current Arthritis treatments typically offer relief from pain and stiffness, but they often trigger side effects, including stomach irritation, fluid retention and headaches.  Researchers continue to study arthritis therapies and are finding promising possibilities.  Biologic agents, for example, are medications designed to interfere with cytokines.  These chemical messengers play a role in inflammation.  Biologic agents can reduce symptoms, limit joint damage, and improve joint function.  Antibiotics may also provide positive results for patients for whom an infection may trigger the onset of rheumatoid arthritis.  If an infectious agent is identified, antibiotics may help prevent the disease.  Preventive vaccines may also be effective in suppressing the activity of a certain white blood cell that can cause joint destruction.

The treatment of arthritis continues everyday, but now there may be answers to those stubborn side effects we often live with.  Check with your doctor and decide what's best for you and your condition.

P.S. - Researchers are also studying how genes play a role in the development of arthritis.
