Innovative Techniques Successful for Veins
by Anisa Perbtani
Summer's heat has its way of coaxing even the most
modest of people into minimizing the clothes they wear. As the
mercury rises, so do our hemlines, as shorts and skirts become the order
of the day. However, if you're among the estimated 80 million
Americans suffering from problems related to varicose and spider veins,
you may be reluctant to wear leg-bearing apparel. If these issues
are keeping you hidden under layers of clothes, there's a solution at
hand. Dr. Carol Younathan of Vascular and Interventional
Physicians (VIP), a division of North Florida Radiology, PA offers the
very best minimally invasive treatments in our area to patients with
symptomatic or cosmetic vein disorders.
Millions of men and women are bothered by telangectasias,
or spider veins - small yet unsightly clusters of red, blue or purple
veins that most commonly appear on the thighs, calves and ankles.
In fact it's estimated that at least half of the adult female population
is plagued with this common cosmetic problem. Dr. Younathan can
improve the appearance of the smaller spider veins, with the use of a
dynamic technology called sclerotherapy. In this simple procedure,
veins are injected with a sclerosing solution, which causes them to
collapse and slowly fade from view.
As an Interventional Radiologist, Dr. Younathan uses
laser ablation to improve the appearance of varicose veins,
characterized by their ropey and twisted appearance, bulging into the
skin surface. This image guided surgical procedure involves the
insertion of a laser fiber into the varicose vein of the leg using
ultrasound imaging to guide the way. The laser fiber is then
withdrawn along the vein, heating it from within to close it, using
local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. The improved treatments
result in only a few small incisions, no risk of general anesthesia, and
a rapid return to normal activities. The methods for treatment of
leg vein disorders have changed dramatically in the past few
years. These refined technologies eliminate troublesome surface
veins, and have almost completely replaced conventional
"stripping" and the need for large incisions. The
procedure may also remedy the bothersome symptoms associated with
varicose veins, including aching, burning, swelling and night cramps.
Dr. Younathan is extremely adept with these
technologies, and conducts a full examination of each patient's leg
venous system, and determines the proper course of care, be it
endovenous laser ablation, sclerotherapy, phlebectomy, or a combination
thereof. Dr. Younathan is Board Certified by the American Board of
Radiology, with Subspecialty Boarding in Vascular and Interventional
Radiology, and has more than 10 years' experience in percutaneous
endovascular techniques.
Most importantly, Dr. Younathan wants her future
patients to know that she truly empathizes with the pain associated with
venous disease, and has experienced great success with these innovative
techniques.
