Sun Smarts: Don't get Burned

Now that the warm weather is in full furce, kids are eager to enjoy outdoor activities.  Unfortunately, excessive exposure to the sun can cause suffering and even permanent damage if the proper precautions are not taken.

Apply sunscreen specifically made for children (6 months and older) with an SPF of at least 15.

Do not apply sunscreen to children under 6 months of age.  So, these children need to be kept completely out of the sun whenever possible.

Chose a sunscreen that is "broad spectrum," which means it protects against UVA & UVB rays.

While swimming, children should wear waterproof sunscreen.  Sunscreen should be re-applied every 90 minutes or according to directions.

Use sunscreen generously and remember those often forget places such as hands, feet and the back of the neck.

Outfit children with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with 100 percent UV protection.

Even when precautions are followed, it is best to minimize the amount of sun exposure during the peak hours of 10am - 4pm.

Check your child's medication.  Some medications causes increased sensitivity to the sun.  Kids on this type of medication may develop severe burns even if sunscreen is applied.  Keep these children out of the sun and consult your physician.

If sunburn occurs, follow these treatment tips:

  • Give your child a pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.  Do NOT give aspirin.

  • Apply Aloe Vera

  • Put your child in the shade

  • Put your child in a cool bath

  • Call your child's physician if the sunburn is severe, blisters develop, or your child has an unexplained, fever, is nauseated, vomiting, fainting or has diarrhea
