Bringing Prescription Drugs Back Within Reach for Millions of Americans
(ARA) – There is a crisis in America with no end in sight. Millions of people across the country are going without medical insurance -- not because they don’t want it, but because they can’t afford it. Without insurance, they are unable to pay for annual physicals and well-baby checkups or the prescription medicines they need to get well when they are sick.
Realizing there is a desperate need among so many for help, a coalition of pharmaceutical companies, doctors, other health care providers, patient advocacy organizations and community groups have come together to form the Partnership for Prescription Assistance -- the largest ever private-sector program to help qualified patients get the help they need. Plans are in the works to bring the program to all 50 states -- one of the latest to join is California, where it’s estimated that more than 5 million people lack health insurance.
Rx Help for Californians is a “clearinghouse” that provides access to more than 2,300 various prescription medications via 350 assistance programs. All people have to do to see if the free service can help them is log on to www.RxHelpforCA.org and enter basic information, including the drug or drugs they are taking, their age, zip code, annual income, number of people in the household and whether they are eligible for Medicare, Medicaid or some other insurance coverage. The database then matches them with one or more of the programs they may be eligible for, and even allows them to download an application on the spot.
For people who don’t have access to a computer, a toll-free hotline is available at (877) 777-7815. Trained representatives who are fluent in English and Spanish are available to guide individuals through the process between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Pacific, Monday through Friday. A translation service for approximately 15 additional languages is also available. In addition to information about the drug discount programs, people can also find out how to enroll in government assistance programs including Medi-Cal, Medicare, Healthy Families and Assistance for Infants and Mothers (AIM).
“Rx Help for Californians will open the door for millions of Californians who have trouble getting their prescriptions,” says Jack Lewin, M.D., executive vice president and CEO of the California Medical Association. “Most people don’t know there are hundreds of pharmaceutical and government-sponsored programs ready, willing and able to help; and now you can find them all in one place.”
Similar assistance programs have already been launched throughout the United States. To find out more, log on to www.pparx.org.
