Methamphetamine Senate Bill
Associated Press
The Senate Judiciary Committee just passed a bill (S.
103) that paves the way that gives states the necessary power to enact
laws designed to monitor sales of over-the-counter drugs containing pseudoephedrine.
The legislation would require that drugs like Sudafed and Nyquil only be
sold from behind the pharmacy counter. Pseudoephedrine is used to in the
process of making methamphetamines across the country in homemade
labs.
With the legislation, consumers would have to show ID,
would then be logged into a computer database and limited to about 250
30mg pills in a 30-day period. Prevention from going to multiple
stores and doing the same thing would be guaranteed through a computer
tracking database.
The law would allow smaller (non-pharmacy) stores to
sell limited quantities through a special training program for the
employees (and also in single doses). States would be allowed to
enact their own laws provided that they were at least as strict as those
designed in federal law.
Retail industry organizations are concerned and voice
opinions that, while they are not against this initiative in principle,
it would be easier if they could comply with one federal law as opposed
to many different state laws. Training will the issue and database
upkeep labor intensive.
