Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a painful swelling of the arm or leg that can occur in patients who have had lymph nodes removed or damaged by radiation or surgical treatment of cancer and other conditions.  Because the lymph nodes are responsible for draining excess fluid that is produced during injury, illness, or physical exertion, their absence or impairment leaves a person with excess fluid.  The swelling is debilitating and can be triggered by simple daily activities such as carrying a purse, consuming salty foods, using the computer extensively or getting a bug bite.  Lymphedema is treatable, especially when caught in the early stages.  Therapy may involve physical therapy, special exercises, compression garments or bandages.  Delayed treatment can result in an irreversible case.

Early symptoms of Lymphedema may be subtle: a feeling of heaviness, tightness or fullness in a limb even though no swelling is visible.  Swelling may initially appear for a short time at the end of the day and disappear by morning.  The limb may tire more easily and feel achy.

P.S. - About 20% - 45% of patients at risk for Lymphedema will develop it, according to studies.
