Hirsutism
Hirsutism is a condition characterized by excessive hair growth on the
body. while some people are genetically inclined to have more body
hair, hirsutism can signal a medical problem. Signs of concern are
the growth of excessive hair growth accompanied by other symptoms that
can include menstrual irregularities, acne or obesity. Hirsutism
can be caused by several problems. An excessive production of
androgens (male hormones) can trigger hirsutism. In 90% of women
with hirsutism, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is also present and may
cause irregular menstrual bleeding, obesity and infirtility.
Hirsutism can also be caused by hair follicles overreacting to normal
levels of androgens.
Blood tests can help identify the reason for an excessive production of
male hormones.
