Heritable Connective Disorders More
than 200 connective tissue disorders that are cause by gene mutations
(heritable) exist today, and most of them are rare. Genes
responsible for tissue building become altered and can affect the
structure, development, and function of the skin, bones, joints, the
heart, blood vessels, lungs, eyes and ears. Ehlers-Danlos
Syndrome, for example, is a group of 10 disorders that effect changes in
the structure of the skin, joints, blood vessels, ligaments and
tendons. Epidermolysis bullosa involves blistering of the skin and
can also strike the gastrointestinal tract, pulmonary system, muscle or
bladder. Marfan syndrome causes excessively long bones and fingers
and can cause skeletal malformations, abnormal positioning of the lens
of the eye, and enlargement of parts of the hearts aorta. P.S.
- Osteogenisis imperfecta causes fragile bones, low muscle mass and
joint ligament slackness.
