Heart Attack Risk

Talking to your doctor about your heart attack risk is a good idea, but you may not know which questions to ask.  The Wall Street Journal recently published some suggestions to get the conversation started.  First, ask for your Framingham risk score, a predictor from a 50-year old study in Framingham, MA  that is based on cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking.  Ask about tests for other risk factors, including C-negative protein and blood markers homocysteine, fibrinogen, or LP(a).  A heart scan can measure calcium in the arteries.  Ask your doctor for your waist size, an important predictor of heart disease.  Confirm that your blood pressure is low enough.  Readings between 120/80 and 140/90 may be an indicator of problems.
