Frozen Shoulder, A Growing Problem As
many as 6 million Americans are currently battling symptoms of a frozen
shoulder. This condition involves an inflammation of the shoulder
capsule that leads to adhesions and scarring that "freeze" the
joint, making it painful or even impossible to achieve full range of
motion. Frozen shoulder can begin spontaneously or occur following
and injury-related period of inactivity. The joint consists of the
top of the arm bone and part of the shoulder blade, connected by
ligaments and muscle. Over time, extending the joint (reaching up
high, for example) can contribute to a tightening that may lead to
frozen shoulder. Early intervention can help prevent the need for
surgery. Cortisone shots, anti-inflammatory medications, and/or
physical therapy may be prescribed.
When you lose mobility in your arm and shoulder, it's
not to be taken lightly. Although it's easier to live with the
sometimes dull pain, if untreated, you could be looking at a much more
serious method of correction.
