Fever during Cancer Treatment

Several upsetting side effects typically accompany chemotherapy, including nausea, vomiting, and fatigue; however, fever is not one of them.  Call the doctor if you have a fever higher than 101° F if you are undergoing cancer treatment or have recently had a bone marrow transplant.  Fever can be caused by several factors, including an infection.  Chemotherapy can weaken the immune system, making it easier for bacteria and viruses to make you ill.  Certain drugs can trigger a fever, as can some medications for preventing infection.  Blood transfusions can lead to a fever.  Less common causes of a fever include blockages of the bladder, bowel or kidney and unrelated conditions, such as blood clots or stroke.

If you are battling cancer and are having symptoms uncommon with regular treatment, talk to your medical provider or a specialist.  

P.S. - Besides fever, call your doctor with any headache, shaking chills, confusion, skin rash, or appetite loss during cancer treatment.
