Parade
The predicted doctor shortage may very well be in the
making now. Parade Magazine noted that medical school applicants
were down 40% since 1996 due to high cost and other factors. It also
noted that almost 40% of the doctors in current practice are over 50
years old. A recent study by the group Merrit, Hawkins &
Associates states that the wait time to see a cardiologist can be a
month or more in some cities. Many hospitals are now finding that they
have to divert patients to other hospitals due to the lack of
specialists on staff when a specific incident occurs.
