Brain Freeze!
How can I avoid brain freeze while
enjoying my ice cream?
There's an easy answer to this one - take smaller
bites. That's the key to avoiding an ice cream headache, or brain
freeze as it's sometimes called.
This finding, published in British Medical Journal, was
made by 13-year-old Canadian Maya Kaczorowski. She asked her
fellow students at Dalewood Middle School to participate in her
experiment. Half of them happily complied with her instructions to
eat two scoops of vanilla ice cream in less than five seconds. The
other half ate their two scoops slowly, and still had some left after 30
seconds.
The results were notable - 27% of the fast eaters
developed an ice cream headache, considerably more than the slow
eaters. It seems that brain freeze is triggered when a cold
substance touches the roof of the mouth. By the way, Maya received
an "A" for her contribution to science.
